Can you identify the narrator?

What is your interpretation of the poem?

Was the poet original?

Was there enough information  provided, or did you feel you needed more?

What kind of emotion was evoked when reading the poem?

When you read the words, what images do you see? How powerful and vivid were the mental images? Could the poet have painted a more vivid picture?

Were there cliches and hackneyed expressions?

Did the poet use active verbs and concrete nouns?

What about the musicality of the poem?

Does the poem cause you to become introspective? Poetry should always lead to reflection and this may lead to enlightenment.

Openings – Does the first line work as a door, an entrance?  Is it fresh?

Endings

Does it resolve what’s gone before or does it purposely leave things unanswered?
Does it offer the reader some discovery or realization?
Does it moralize or summarize?  – It shouldn’t.
Does it resonate beyond the poem itself?
